Los Angeles has a bad reputation for pretentious hot spots. But if you do your research there are plenty of casual fun hang outs to grab some good food and stiff drinks with your friends.
Saturday night was the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. It was also a friend’s birthday. He decided to have everyone meet up at The Garage on Motor Ave. Although the fight was a bust (and I’m not just saying that because I’m more of a UFC fan) the night was still a lot of fun.
The Garage is a casual sports bar with TVs everywhere you look. Although the fight was slow, the service was not, which on a busy night is to be commended. The ambiance is meh…but you come for the stiff drinks, pub food and laid back sporty atmosphere. Our table that night was actually a ping pong table. They regularly host games on the Patio.
**If you value your lungs, you may want to stay away from the Patio on busy nights. It’s one of the few places left in LA you can smoke, and people really take advantage of this opportunity.**
The multitude of TVs makes it easy to keep an eye on more than one game. We were able to watch both the Clippers game 7 and the Boxing Prelims. The other thing I noticed were plates and plates of sliders crossing the entire bar. Everyone ordered delicious looking tiny burgers piled high with toppings. I’m kind of regretting not trying the BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders with Apple Fennel Slaw. They also serve tots, tacos, wings, sandwiches, pizza and even some vegan friendly tofu salads.
I’d like to go back to The Garage another night, because I think it’s worth a second look. They have loads of seasonal beers on tap and an impressive Whiskey/Bourbon list. Maybe I will check them out for the next UFC match or NBA Playoffs. It’s a good excuse to get some friends together, watch some sports and eat some sliders.
