The promise of a new year always stirs up excitement. A chance to try new things, or finally get to all those things you were going to do last year, but ran out of time. As for me, I already have big plans for 2017.
It’s almost the middle of January. The holidays are over and the decorations are stowed away. Except for a few people on my block, whom I’m convinced leave their lights up all year. We’ve slowly assimilated back in to work weeks and the routine of our regularly scheduled lives. But that doesn’t mean boring monotony. Nope. It means a chance to fill those blank calendar boxes with some fun exciting activities.
dineL.A. Restaurant Week starts in two days. I always look forward to this two week celebration of food! Restaurants all over Los Angeles county plate up specially priced menus while showcasing the diversity of cuisines LA has to offer. The dineL.A. Exclusive Series, presented by American Express returns once again to showcase the best of the best of fine dining in Los Angeles with special dinner menus starting at $95/person. If you want to indulge in some of the best food at some fancy-schmancy hot spots, then you will want to make reservations asap. Another fun aspect of dineL.A. is the Dine.Snap.Win sweepstakes. Admit it, we are all guilty of making friends and family hungrily wait while we take the perfect Instagram pic of their meals. Well, now you can treat them to a much needed vacation for putting up with your food-porn obsession. American Airlines is giving away 100,000 airline miles. All you have to do is post a delicious picture of your dineL.A. eats on Instagram and use the hashtag #DineSnapWin

Next month I will be a first time attendee to the Edwardian Ball. I love Edward Gorey. I can remember watching “Mystery” with my mother when I was very young. I was immediately entranced by the show’s black and white pen & ink drawn opening. And since I’ve been into the Gothic and macabre for as long as I can remember, the fact that it centered around a murder, helped peak my interest. The Edwardian Ball is a celebration of Edward Gorey’s beloved creations. Set in a re-imagined Edwardian Era, this elegant and whimsical party celebrates art, music, technology, fashion, the circus and more. I’ve known friends whom attended in the past and after hearing their glowing reviews I decided I must go. Now I just must find something to wear. It’s definitely a see and be seen event. I have one month left to complete my costume, and by that I mean, actually start working the plethora of ideas swirling in my head. This years event will take place at the Globe Theater in the historic Broadway district of LA. Seems fitting that this 103 year old building be the backdrop to the festivities. I’m really looking forward to the art installations, parlor games, dancing and of course absinthe cocktails. Tickets are still available. Get yours here.
Not a bad start to the year. If the rest of my months are as enjoyably eventful as the first two, it’s going to be a fun ride. I love Los Angeles because no matter how long I’ve lived here there is always something new to discover. I hope you’ll join me on another years worth of adventures. But for now, I’ve got a costume to sew.
